Clmbxr Turns 5

Words by a 5 year old

As Clmbxr hits its 5th milestone, I'm blown away by our journey. It all started as a simple idea to rally friends for climbing sessions. From Mile End to Bermondsey's Arch and finally settling at VauxEast and Yonder, we've grown into a vibrant community.

Words by Rotimi, Founder

What began as a WhatsApp group evolved into Clmbxr, thanks to the gang's disdain for my original name “Rotimi’s Rock Climbers”. Ahead of Global Climbing Day in Aug 2019, The North Face (TNF) hosted a climbing event where I connected with Jack, a TNF leader. Little did I know, this conversation would lead to bigger things.

Then 2020 hit, halting our climbs and fistbumps. But we adapted – some skipped rope, others ran, and I cycled my way to Brighton. Meanwhile, a global reckoning on racial injustice spurred change.

Amidst it all, Clmbxr's impact grew. We starred in Adidas and Samsung ads, featured in Men’s Health and GQ, even caught the Olympics' eye. But beyond the limelight, it's our grassroots impact I'm proudest of.

We've hosted countless sessions, introduced thousands to climbing, and fostered a community that extends far beyond the walls. Marriages, proposals, Clmbxr kids – it's all part of our journey. And this is just the beginning.

Did You Know?

Sophia Danenberg

In 2006, Sophia achieved the historic feat of becoming the initial African American and Black woman to conquer Mount Everest in the Himalayas.

Sophia embarked on her climbing journey with her first significant ascent at Mt. Rainier in Washington State back in 2002. Over the subsequent two years, she triumphed over other formidable peaks including Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Baker, and Mt. Kenya.

The year 2005 marked a particularly remarkable period for Sophia as she conquered an impressive array of five peaks: Grand Teton, Mount Katahdin, Mount Denali, Mount Tasman, and Ama Dablam.

Gerie Simon (Pronounced Gee-rie)

How long have you been climbing?

I’ve been climbing for 4-5 years.

How did you get into it?

I was introduced to climbing by a client who took me to an indoor climbing gym.

Up until that point, I had no idea that gyms like this existed. That's when I got hooked.
