Sometimer or Clmbxr?

Words by Vanessa Creppy

Whether you're a perpetual beginner or comfortably cruising up the V levels, let's take a moment to check in as we wrap up the first quarter of 2024.

How's your year shaping up so far?

Vanessa Creppy

We kicked off the year with some penning down our climbing goals, and whether you've crushed them or they're still a work in progress, guess what?

It's Q2 now, baby! Time for a refresh and a serious hustle.

You know how it is, sometimes we sit back and wait for life to give us that push we need, or we just go with the flow. But hey, let’s remind ourselves why we joined Clmbxr and persevere with building our stamina, strength, as well as friendships. You know the vibes, come solo, leave connected.

And in the wider society, it's pretty obvious we are losing connection with each other. Hello! The social fabrics? It’s literally crumbling! Just take a look at:

1) The way people drive.

2) The fact that you can have a young cry on the tube without anyone batting an eye.

But fear not, because here at Clmbxr, we're all about coming together, breaking bread, and swapping stories. Oh, and did someone say Clmbxr trip to Paris? Count me in!

Everytime we get on the wall, or set some time up to act toward our hobbies/education, we build our self-efficacy with mastery (firsthand) experiences.

Self-efficacy is like a back bone to our sense of satisfaction and helps us to accomplish things. You can read more about this here (https://pressbooks.pub/inclusiveperspectives/chapter/ sources-of-self-efficacy/ and https://positivepsychology.com/3-ways-build-self-efficacy/)

Here’s a short Q&A with some of the gang about commitment and consistency.

Did You Know?

Words by Francis Lockwood Estrin

Climbing, though ancient, lacked written records until the 1700s. Elizabeth Smith, in 1801, and Marie Paradis, in 1808, made early ascents. Lucky Palmer, a Liverpool native, achieved numerous firsts, including the Matterhorn in 1871. Fanny Bullock-Workman, reaching Pinnacle Peak in 1906, linked climbing with feminism. Their efforts normalised women climbers, leading to women's climbing clubs in the early 1900s. Lucy Walker, president of the Women’s Alpine Club, exemplified this progress. Rock climbing in skirts, as seen in a 1908 photo, illustrates their pioneering spirit. (Photo source: [link])

Community Spotlight - Aaron Pacheco

Aaron Pacheco

How long have you been climbing?

I’ve been climbing for 4-5 years.

How did you get into it?

I was introduced to climbing by a client who took me to an indoor climbing gym.

Up until that point, I had no idea that gyms like this existed. That's when I got hooked.

Your favourite Clmbxr moment?

Seeing the progress from a WhatsApp group with friends to becoming a climbing community has been inspiring.

What are your climbing goals for this year?

Climb my first 7B grade outdoor sport/lead climbing and introduce more of the Clmbxr community into climbing outdoors allowing them to develop new skills.
